One probable cause, we were told, was that-since loons nest very near shore and since the water was unusually high both springs-the nests may have flooded.īecause loons are such captivating creatures, when one is near, you stop and watch-as I did one midsummer day. On our pond, we once went for two years without a single chick sighting, and we mourned the loss. Loon lovers eagerly await the report on the evening news and celebrate successes. ![]() On an appointed day, designated people all across Maine are asked to call in the number of baby loons that have been spotted. Similar vigils and conversations take place all over the state. These vigils are often the topic of neighborly conversation. We know where the regular island nesting sites are hidden, and we monitor them from a safe distance. Those of us who live on the lake sometimes place a friendly wager on the date of their return. The arrival of the loons after each long winter is highly anticipated and marks the turn of spring. Unfortunately, because of human incursions, the loon is now listed as a protected species. What a marvelously joyful way to begin a day! While kayaking one misty early morning on Sand Pond, I found myself suddenly in the midst of their social mysteries-seven of them dancing and singing to a double echo of themselves from nearby hills. Each pair requires its own pond (the Maine word for a smaller lake)-that is, except before migration, when they gather in parties to socialize. A loon’s territorial needs are specific and great. If lucky, they have one or two chicks each season. They mate for life, which can be twenty to thirty years. You feel as if you will never be the same again.Ī prehistoric species that is sixty million years old, loons have existed in North America longer than any other bird. The first time you hear them, your heart quivers. The lonely sounds echo across lakes, especially in the quiet nights and early mornings. Their calls are hauntingly ancient and range from an eerie wail to a screeching yodel, or melodic tremolo. If you have ever been lucky enough to be swimming and have one pop up right in front of you, you know they have brilliant, ruby-red eyes. Loons feed on small fish and so are skilled underwater swimmers, often staying down for several minutes and going as far as a hundred yards in one dive. About the size of a goose, it has a long, pointed bill and, in the summer, has distinctive black and white plumage. ![]() Cree Indians named it Mookwa, meaning the Spirit of the Northern Waters. There is a mystical bird-a symbol of wilderness and solitude-that lives on North Woods lakes in the summer. Where is your salvation? He is confident that Jesus death brought him Salvation. I'm not a member but I see the truth in his messages. It is one a few churches that preaches morality within and without. I have read an article where pastors are debating who is the richest. He keeps the standard of his faith even when one of his children broke the rule. I am very sure you weren't a witness to the story that was written approximately 400 years after the alleged Jesus was executed for his crime.
